It's not very exciting to start a new year without any pictures but that's how this past week went down. Since this blog is a family journal, I decided to record a few of the events even without photos.
After an enjoyable break from school, the kids returned on Tuesday, January 3. Just as we were getting back into the swing of things, extreme weather conditions (-20 F+) brought school closures on Thursday and Friday. Basically, the kids have had three full weeks off from school (minus 2 days). I had several foot zone appointments already scheduled along with visiting teaching while the kids were home, but they didn't seem to mind the extra freedom. One day was spent 'dejunking' drawers and going through clothing. I love having all the kids' clothing in one room because it "encourages" everyone to evaluate and keep only that which they really want, need, love and use.
It was after this project that we heard the sobering news of our friends (Gordon's) in the nearby Sage Hills neighborhood - their home caught fire and completely burned to the ground. The children were not in the home at the time but returned from running errands to see fire coming from the house. The parents were actually in Utah but quickly returned to the devastating situation. We live in a wonderful community that will rally and support this family but the loss has been tremendous. Such situations put the affairs of this life back into perspective for everyone. Never mind the broken dryer we finally had repaired this week or the fact that our septic had to be pumped (expensive) or the frozen pipes (again) or the myriad of other minor repairs that seem to have been exhausting time/resources around our home lately. At least we have a home! We have been counting our many blessings...
For many years I was the only January birthday in the family. Not so anymore. There's a plethora of nieces and nephews that share this birthday month with me now. On Friday evening we celebrated Jett's 3rd birthday at Bob and Janene's house as our final meal together for a while. Bob and Janene left for St. George yesterday morning. They have plans to return in April so Aaron and I will be looking after their house until then. Cameron left for Arizona for several months to make amends and hopefully get his life completely back on track before he returns. He won't be seeing his boys for quite a while but I'm sure we'll have them over occasionally on some weekends.
We are looking forward to another fantastic year and welcome this time of change - hooray for 2017!

So sorry to hear about your friends' home. Something so sobering does help us appreciate our blessings. Glad no one was hurt.
We had five days in a row off because of the weather. We finally had school on Wednesday.
