| Anna waiting for her turn on stage. |
The week of our local county fair (August 11-16) is a mixed bag for me. I'm supportive of my girls participating in 4-H for numerous reasons but at the end of the day, it's still a 'government program' with lots of unnecessary paperwork via record books, project books, etc. I am my mother's daughter and we have opinions about such things:). The girls have fun sewing and cooking but the documentation seems to sneak up at the end so the girls scramble and put in a half-effort job just to turn stuff in on time. This year Brinley sewed most of her hoodie but didn't get the finishing touches done before fair so she decided to forgo the modeling review.
Anna enjoyed sewing these purple flannel pj pants and a cute draw-string bag.
Several of her friends participated in this group so their weekly meetings were something she looked forward to. She also learned more about photography but didn't submit it for the fair (unfinished).
Girls in our ward - Kenna, Bailey, Mariah, Anna
Anna picked up right where Brinley left off this summer with all things 4-H related.
She demonstrated how to make granola for the judges and did a wonderful job.
Her motivation for this one - the automatic $10 she'll receive at Awards Night in October.
We had a baking party at our place last week as Brinley, Anna, Elsie and Quinn ALL participated in the annual baking contest which is part of the fair. It took a long time to clean up the kitchen after everybody turned in their baked goods for the judges. A second-place finish came for Anna with the molasses raisin cookies she made (new recipe - not ideal - especially when dough required 2-hours of refrigeration, etc.). All six children were in attendance for the sampling session. What a sugar-fest!
It seems I spend a good amount of brain power thinking through various schedules and scenarios - working for the best possible outcome. This is a daily requirement in my life. And sometimes, things come together in a beautiful even miraculous way. Such was the case for us last weekend. Without going into all the details, I wanted to make note of it in this family journal.
In a nutshell, I was asked to accompany a group of scouts (and others) on the Tablerock Hike which was going to eliminate our chances of attending the Ogden Temple open house. Jantzen really wanted to complete this challenging hike but the other children wanted to leave for UT sooner than later. I decided to forgo the hike (they ended up having enough leaders) and leave for UT with enough time to tour the temple before arriving late that evening at Bonnie and Bryant's place where we were spending the night prior to Breanna speaking in church the next morning. Aaron's return flight from Boston to IF would get him home late but we decided he could drive a separate car down with Jantzen (though they wouldn't make the open house). Saturday afternoon while preparing to leave town, Aaron informed me of a delayed flight from SL to IF due to mechanical problems. Within minutes, Jantzen called to say he was off the mountain and on his way home (still an hour away) and could we wait for him. The kid practically ran up the mountain to complete it so quickly! I called Aaron to tell him not to take the last leg of his flight but to find a shuttle to take him to Ogden instead. In the end, it all worked out perfectly. The timing was orchestrated by the angels (minus the fact that Aaron had to hang out at Denny's for nearly 3 hours - waiting for us).

The scouts slept out under the stars the night before the big hike.
Not sure about the shorts here, but for the record, I know he packed warmer options.
It's chilly at the top of this mountain.

This hike is so steep it's known to be a thigh-burner for days after.
Even Jantzen will attest to that fact.

Ogden Temple Open House - Saturday night
Tanner and Bonnie - in the kitchen Sunday afternoon
| Bryant, Breanna, Bonnie |
Breanna will be a fabulous missionary. We are so excited for the opportunities that await her while serving in the Wichita Kansas Mission for the next 18 months. Family and friends gathered for a tasty luncheon at Bonnie and Bryant's home following the block of meetings on Sunday.
We love Breanna!
And when she returns, Tanner will be preparing to leave.
(But I'm not going to think about that yet).

Wow! I'm happy that you were all able to make it to the temple open house. That was quite a hike, Jantzen. Congrats to the 4-H era and the Mom that supports them!
