Field trips are a mixed-bag around here since there is zero funding for them. Translation - when any excursion is taken, funding comes directly out of the teachers' personal pocketbook or is the result of generous parent donations. A small donation from each child is usually asked for to help cover bus/fuel costs but it is rarely adequate to cover actual costs.
Fortunately for Jantzen, an anonymous donor made it possible for his 4th grade class to travel in style (in a comfy commercial bus) to the National Smoke Jumper Center in West Yellowstone, Montana on September 7, 2012.
Smoke Jumpers are trained to jump out of an aircraft into a wildfire.
The children learned all about the role of smoke jumpers and received a day of hands-on training.

Physical fitness is an important part of their training.
And they dig a lot of trenches while fighting fires in the wilderness.
The class practiced jumping out of an aircraft before actually exploring the inside of one.
While the class participated in the junior smoke jumper training, the local news captured snippets of the day. Later, we watched the evening news broadcast online and discovered that Jantzen was repeatedly featured in the coverage reported.
