Spud Harvest Break - Part 2

It was an early morning for Jantzen and Aaron as they left home to catch a flight to CA on Saturday, October 1.  The much-anticipated 14-year old trip with Dad had finally arrived.  And these two had a great time bonding and exploring together while traversing the California countryside.

First up on their list was attending a professional soccer game at the Avaya Stadium in San Jose, CA - Real Salt Lake vs. San Jose.  With the time change, they were able to watch/listen to all of the Priesthood Session of General Conference together before the game even started.  Perfect!  In fact, Aaron was able to be a missionary during the game and exchanged information with a fellow attendee.  There will likely be follow-up conversations with this awesome guy:).

Because they stayed at a WorldMark Resort in Windsor, CA, they spent Monday exploring the incredible Armstrong Redwoods State National Reserve.   No matter the falling raindrops because the canopy of vegetation provided the ultimate umbrella.  The oldest tree was nearly 1400 years old and a majestic site to see.  These boys really appreciated their time in nature and this became a real highlight of their trip together.

Bodega Bay - north coast

A day at the beach is rejuvenating whether you play in the water or not.  With cooler temperatures, they opted to watch sea lions from the shore.  And once again, enjoy the beauties of Mother Earth.

Windsor, CA is wine country so Aaron is showing off the local grapes they enjoyed eating.

These two were very fortunate to snag last minute tickets (Wednesday) to visit Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay and home of the infamous top-security federal prison (1934-1963).  Alcatraz has been part of the National Park Service since 1972.

The audio tour was completely fascinating to these history buffs.  

The boys checked out Pier 39 and enjoyed lunch at "Wipe Out Bar & Grill" where their table was shaped like a surf board.  Aaron was all about seafood/chowder and Jantzen loved the turkey sandwich and tasty fries.

Levi Stadium south of San Francisco

Jantzen had plans to attend the Oakland Temple while Aaron went to a business luncheon but found it was closed for cleaning.  Instead, he remained at the hotel for a bit.  Later Thursday evening, these two attended their first ever NFL game held in the massive Levi Stadium where they watched the San Francisco 49ers take on the Arizona Cardinals (31-14).

The milkshake was much better than the garlic fries according to Jantzen.  Aaron was pleasantly surprised by his tasty black bean burger.

On Friday, Aaron and Jantzen timed it perfectly to be on the Golden Gate Bridge just as the Blue Angels began their hour-long air show during the annual Fleet Week.  This year of 2016 marks the 70th anniversary of the United States Navy's flight demonstration squadron comprised of aviators from the Navy and Marine Corp. - otherwise known as the Blue Angels.  It was a spectacular show and they had the best seats around.  The planes literally buzzed the bridge as they came within 50-100 yards.  A real highlight event!

For their final evening, Aaron scored half-priced tickets for a show at the Marrakech Magic Theater in San Francisco.  Jantzen is really into doing his own magic tricks these days so he fully appreciated the opportunity.  He was even called up on stage to be part of one of the tricks.  The magician took a special interest in Aaron and Jantzen and spent extra time talking with them before the show.  These two seemed to have that effect wherever they went.  People were drawn to them - no doubt because of the wonderful spirit they carry.  The next morning, it was time to head back home.  We were happy for their safe return.  It was back to school for everybody after a delightful Spud Harvest.
