Gotta Love the Spud--Part I

There are rumors that Spud Harvest Break will become obsolete as much of the potato harvest has become automated.  Obviously, the school board does not control the weather patterns and scheduling the harvest break a year in advance doesn't always work out best for the farmers.  Those students lucky enough to land a job working in the harvest make great money but there are so few positions available for all of the teenagers in the area.  And so, a tradition has developed for us.  We leave town for a few days to enjoy time together as a family.

I have noticed a pattern the last few years.  We leave town when the weather is perfect - and seem to return during a 'premature' cold snap.  This year was no exception.  When we said our good-byes to upper 90's in St. George, harsh reality set in when we came home to a frozen garden.  It was, however, a beautiful 75 degrees today...

I picked up the kids from school on Friday, September 28th and we headed south to G-ma and G-pa P's place.  Aaron flew into the Salt Lake Airport late that evening and joined us as we continued our journey on Saturday to St. George, UT -- arriving just in time for me to attend the General Relief Society Broadcast.  I was cheering on our family friend, Linda Burton (General RS Pres.) with her new responsibilities.

Sunday morning we randomly picked a local ward to attend that met our 11:00am criteria.  It didn't take long to figure out we happened upon the same ward my brother-in-law's parents and sister's family live in.  After the meeting ended, we visited a bit before parting ways.

The kids enjoyed our time in St. George two years ago so we decided to return this year.  It's funny the little things they remembered and wanted to do again - including a trip to this very cool park nearby.

Defying gravity...

Monday morning we headed to beautiful Snow Canyon to enjoy a few hiking trails.

 And a little free-style rock-climbing...

Sections of the trails were 'red sand'.  Quinn couldn't resist stopping every few yards and plopping himself down in the middle of the trail - sprawled out in delight at the giant sandbox available to him.

Above Aaron you can see the names of a few early pioneers who helped settled the area.
They wrote their names in axle grease.

After a morning of hiking, we returned to the WorldMark Resort and spent the afternoon in the pool.  Later that evening, I took the older four to the Tuacahn Theatre for the new-to-stage Disney musical - "Aladdin".  We especially liked the flying carpet and camels.

Despite the stoic photo op, they did enjoy the show:)

When we drove through southeast Idaho this weekend, we saw lots of potato harvesting. They were a little past the school spud harvest break.
